Connect your own AI
Use Claude Desktop, Claude Code or Codex CLI to drive Microsoft Project through ProjecX.
Before you start
- Install ProjecX and open Microsoft Project with a project file loaded.
- Find where ProjecX is installed. The default is
C:\Program Files\ProjecX\main.exe. If you installed for your user only, it is%LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\ProjecX\main.exe. - You do not need to keep the ProjecX chat window open. Your AI app starts the ProjecX server by itself.
Claude Desktop
Open Settings > Developer > Edit Config and add this to claude_desktop_config.json, then restart Claude Desktop:
{
"mcpServers": {
"projecx": {
"command": "C:\\Program Files\\ProjecX\\main.exe",
"args": ["--mcp-server"]
}
}
}
Claude Code
Run this once in a terminal:
claude mcp add projecx -- "C:\Program Files\ProjecX\main.exe" --mcp-server
Codex CLI
Add this to %USERPROFILE%\.codex\config.toml:
[mcp_servers.projecx] command = "C:\\Program Files\\ProjecX\\main.exe" args = ["--mcp-server"]
Other MCP clients
Any client that can run a local stdio server works. Point it at main.exe with the single argument --mcp-server.
Check it works
With Microsoft Project open, ask your AI: "List the tasks in my open project." If it answers with your tasks, you are connected.
Troubleshooting
- No ProjecX tools appear: restart the AI app fully, and check the path to
main.exeis correct. In JSON and TOML files every backslash must be doubled. - "No active project" or COM errors: Microsoft Project must be running with a file open, and ProjecX and Project must run as the same Windows user.
- Large programs: share your scope documents with your AI and ask for a work program. It builds the schedule through the ProjecX tools.
